This painting is inspired by a waitressing job I did as a student at Whittakers’ Department Store in Bolton. Here the Sweet Trolley was something to die for, especially if it was your job to push it along. Ladies who lunch in Bolton were also ladies who had afternoon tea. Droves used to arrive every afternoon from 3-4 pm and gaze lovingly at Bolton’s best creamy confections, debating which cake was best for their diets. My job was to serve them ‘just a small piece’ and use my artistic skills with the squirty cream. The initial idea for the painting was to get the swirls of cream higher than the coffee pot. Alas, the strong directional light/mountain of cream combination didn’t work. The problems we artists face!
