I love painting birds on a gold leaf background and this puffin is adding to a series which has included Blue Tits, Goldfinches, Kingfishers and Hummingbirds. I am grateful to the photographer Brad Paul Bradder for enabling artists to use his superb photographs of this bird.
The puffin combines a largely monotone colour body shape with a high colour beak, eye and legs. The smooth surface of the main painting and gold leaf is contrasted with the impasto grasses. The black and gold frame is used throughout my gold leaf collection enabling collectors to group my paintings together.
