You don’t see hummingbirds in the wild in England and therefore I was grateful to Dominic Mulholland, a wildlife photographer, for use of this hummingbird image on which I based the painting. I was attracted by the sheer brilliance of the magentas against the greens and yellows of the bird and the textured nature of its plumage. To help magnify the colours the painting was executed on 23 carat gold leaf.
