Spetchley White Peony on Gold
Oil painting on 23 carat gold leaf, painting size 16×12 inches/41x30cm. Framed in a double black and gold wood frame. Framed size 19×15 inches/48x38cm. Price £475
This painting began its life as a small oil painting on gold leaf which sold at one of my first exhibitions. I later recognised that by changing the proportions and creating a bigger painting with a larger gold leaf area I could create the idea of a hanging flower lit by the sun. These beautiful peonies are in Spetchley Park Gardens where I did an Artist Residency from 2021-2024. Their extensive collection of peonies is much admired. I have had the privilege of exhibiting in the gardens during their peony season and sharing my enthusiasm for this flower with others.
The painting is on board with 23 carat gold of a deep shade and this provides a beautiful warm glow to the painting and in the room surrounding it. By using a very limited palette of whites, yellows and greens I emphasised the extraordinary beauty of this flower. The heavily impasto central area contrasts with the smooth petals and the inner light of the flower is created by using very thin transparent glazes of colour.
The painting is one of a group of peony paintings on gold leaf with a double black and gold frame and includes Rosemoor White Rockii Peony
