This painting is inspired by memories of working at the Mindolo Ecumenical Foundation in Kitwe, Zambia where these stunning lilies littered our campus. This perennial flower is also the national flower of Zimbabwe.  I was delighted to find a spectacular show of them blooming in greenhouses  in Spetchley Park Gardens near Worcester last summer during my residency there. What intrigues me about the Flame Lily is the variety of shapes of the opening bud and flower.

Creating paintings on gold leaf is a lengthy and delicate process which involves many different layers of preparation before the drawing can be placed on the gold. After the gold is secured with a shellac varnish the painting can begin. This unique painting was  built up in thin layers of paint and in the case of the flowers, layers of transparent glazes, so that the dramatic beauty of the flowers is emphasised.
